Where do we work?
We are based next door to Gainsborough House - a prestigious and beautiful
listed building which is a permanent home to many of the Gainsborough's 18th century
landscape artist's paintings.
The actual address we work from, No 47 Gainsborough Street, is a striking building
from 1840. The large banks of windows at the side in Weavers Lane originally existed
on the ground floor as well, and tell of its industrial origins.
It is the oldest silk factory to survive in Sudbury and was built by William Hill
- a silk manufacturer who lived next door in Gainsborough House. The 1851
census records that he employed 200 men, 400 women and 50 girls.
The women and girls worked here, throwing and 'spinning' the yarn and preparing
the warps for the weavers, and the men worked on their looms at home in the nearby
rows of weavers cottages.
